چکیده

Nanocalorimetry was used to investigate the melting of Bi nanoparticles. The particles were formed by evaporating Bi onto a silicon nitride substrate, which was then heated. The particles self-assemble into truncated spherical particles. Below 5-nm average film thickness, mean particle sizes increased linearly with deposition thickness but increased rapidly for 10-nm-thick films. As expected, small particles were found to exhibit size-dependent melting temperatures less than the bulk melting temperature (e.g., DT=67 K for a 3-nm radius particle). The measured melting temperatures for particles below ,7 nm in radius, however, were ,50 K above the value predicted by the homogeneous melting model. We discuss this discrepancy in terms of a possible size-dependent crystal structure change and the superheating of the solid phase. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. [DOI: 10.1063/1.1832741]

Influence of Size on the Melting Temperature of Metallic Nanoparticle

In This paper, the effect of size on melting temperature of metallic nanoparticles (Au, Pb and Bi) is theoretically simulated and explained. In this regard, the cause of difference in various experimental data is introduced, which is the difference between nanoparticles’ grain Gaussian distribution. This volume-depended model with the help of the Gaussian distribution can descri...

Phase change nanocomposites with tunable melting temperature and thermal energy storage density.

Size-dependent melting decouples melting temperature from chemical composition and provides a new design variable for phase change material applications. To demonstrate this potential, we create nanocomposites that exhibit stable and tunable melting temperatures through numerous melt-freeze cycles. These composites consist of a monodisperse ensemble of Bi nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a polyi...

Size-dependent melting behavior of iron nanoparticles by replica exchange molecular dynamics.

Using the replica-exchange molecular dynamics method (REMD), we have investigated the size dependence of the melting behavior of iron nanoparticles. Comparing to conventional molecular dynamics (MD), the REMD method is found to be very efficient in determining the melting point by avoiding superheating and undercooling phenomena. With accurate determination of the melting point, we find that th...

Validity of Wulff construction used for size-dependent melting point of nanoparticles

An integrated model based on the variant of Ba/Bt, is established to predict size-dependent melting point of nanoparticles by considering the geometric and energetic characteristics of Wulff construction. Ba is the rest bond number and Bt denotes the total bond number without broken bonds in a Wulff construction. Without any adjustable parameters, this model predicts a decreasing trend of melti...

Metal matrix-metal nanoparticle composites with tunable melting temperature and high thermal conductivity for phase-change thermal storage.

Phase-change materials (PCMs) are of broad interest for thermal storage and management applications. For energy-dense storage with fast thermal charging/discharging rates, a PCM should have a suitable melting temperature, large enthalpy of fusion, and high thermal conductivity. To simultaneously accomplish these traits, we custom design nanocomposites consisting of phase-change Bi nanoparticles...
